The Steeple of the Piarist Church
In former days, church bells were crucial: their pitch and volume told you exactly, which time it was, when to get up and when to go home.
In Krems the public clock was the one on the steeple of the Piarist church. Situated high above the town it was the perfect landmark. By the way, that’s exactly the reason why this very steeple is owned by the city of Krems still today: not only the clock and the bells were found there, but it was also the home of the town’s watchman. And so, when in the 17th cent. the church was handed over to the Jesuit order, its tower remained the property of the town.
