The pharmacy in Stein
In 1783, the chemist Heinrich Kreidl applied for the opening of a pharmacy in Stein. The main reason for his request was the lack of a drugstore in Stein. The nearest ones were in Krems and in Göttweig Abbey, so getting there and back was a rather time-consuming affair.
Not only the opening of the pharmacy had to be approved officially, but also its clientele: the chemist was allowed to sell his drugs to the citizens and the poor of Stein as well as to the prisoners of the local jail.
By the way, since its founding the pharmacy is being located at the very same place under the very same name: „Zum Engel“ („Angel’s Pharmacy“).
