„The Elephant Inn“

Today it is called „Haus der Regionen“ („House of the Regions“). But for several centuries this building was better known as „The Elephant Inn“. The origin of this epithet dates back to the 16th century, when the later emperor Maximilian II. allegedly stayed here overnight with an elephant as member of his entourage. This unusual guest surely attracted a lot of attention!

Later on, this place became very popular with day-trippers. In the 20th century people from Krems loved to go to the coffee house with dance floor there, especially after the traditional balls.
