The Chronogram on the Steiner Tor
The Steiner Tor, the former town gate of Krems, was rebuilt in 1756. With a closer look on the gate’s front, we can decipher this date. When reading the latin phrase „Conspicite Fidelitatis Praemia“ („See the reward of loyalty“), you’ll discover that some of the letters are written in red. They act as roman numerals at the same time. So, when you arrange them from their highest to their lowest value, you read MDCCLIIIIII = 1756.
This is a chronogram, an inscription AND a particular date both at the same time.
